Blog #22: Queen of Shadows
This will be a shorter blog post about Queen of Shadows, just because there are so many spoilers that if I deep dived it would just spoil the whole book.. Also, while our main female character has gone by a few names, I will be referring to her as her royal name, Aelin, just to make things easier when reading this post.
Before I dive into why I loved this book, I just wanted to take a moment to say something I didn’t like. There are so many characters, and it can be a bit difficult to follow with so many different characters and different interactions. There were characters that knew Aelin, characters that follow her, characters of people that follow Chaol, and there’s all the witches and their pecking order. I know it’s part of the world building, especially with the main character and building allies, but it was definitely still hard to remember who was who, and what part they played.
I read Queen of Shadows in two weeks, so yes, I actually really enjoyed reading Queen of Shadows, especially the last 100 pages if I’m being honest. It was nice to read about people from Aelin’s past such as Arobynn and Lysandra. I liked seeing how manipulative and cunning Arobynn was, which gave us as a reader an idea as to why Aelin couldn’t just leave and why she was a powerful assassin. And then there is Lysandra, a courtesan that serviced Arobynn. Looking back into Aelin’s past, it was interesting to read about where they both came from knowing each other in the past, and where they were now in the present. I won’t say more about these two because of SPOILERS, but just know their relationship is awesome-sauce.
Speaking of multiple characters and having a hard time following them up above, I honestly did not like the character Elide. She was just abruptly thrown into the mix, and really had no reason to be there. She was reading maps and such that belonged to Manon. She was a terrible spy and got caught. And since all we know of Manon is that she’s a ruthless killer, it was odd that she didn’t kill Elide for going through her stuff. Maybe this will change though so we’ll see what happens.
Also, I still strongly dislike Chaol, and his whole, “your magic is dangerous” spiel. Like, c’mon dude. Her magic is better than what the king is doing. My god!
On to other things though.
I really liked the valg in the story, and how they can take over your body, and feed off of your soul and act as you. It was definitely a smart move made by the King, and how he used it to control his son, Dorian, with a valg chain necklace
Lastly, I found Manon Blackbeak uninteresting in the previous book. I just wasn’t vibing with her at all. But in this book, I found her storyline to be so interesting. How she’s learning more and more about her clan, how she’s branching out from the coven. I’m just curious how she’ll run her group of 13, and the 13 that ride and battle with the Wyverns. I won’t say much else due to spoilers, and any spoilers about the Witches spoilers things going on in other areas of the book, even with characters she doesn’t know about.
So yes, I’d just like to say I enjoyed this book a lot and can’t wait to read Empire of Storms!
