Blog #25: Onyx Storm
Possible Spoilers
This’ll be a shorter blog post:
I honestly don’t have much to say about Onyx Storm. It feels like very little happened, but at the same time so much. There were a lot of characters to keep up with, and I sometimes found myself confused about what and who I was reading about. Especially the first one hundred pages, I was so confused as to who was who. I kept asking myself: “Did I miss something?” But the last 100 pages were really good, and some major things happened that I won’t spoil here you’ll have to go read it yourself.
Before I delve in, I found it so funny how the characters made fun of Violet and Xaden’s behavior from Iron Flame. “I love you, but I can’t trust you!” and this issue was made fun of quite a bit in Onyx Storm. That was all that happened in Iron Flame it seemed, so it was nice to see the author/characters make fun of them for this in this book.
The theme for this book is Xaden saying he’s dangerous to Violet, and her trying to convince him he would never harm her and she’d find a cure before he turns venin. It got kind of repetitive, just like it did in book 2 about the “trust” issues. This is made up by the great spicy scenes. The spice was well worth the wait, so I give that a solid 10/10.
Okay but can we talk about Ridoc for a second? His signet involves water, pretty tame right? But water is in people’s bodies, and he realizes he can freeze people from the inside out and kill them that way. How fucking cruel and terrifying is that!? I would’ve never thought to manipulate water in that way. I just thought it was a really cool way to manipulate water and kill people just like that!
The whole Violet committing treason but doing it right before everyone is pardoned was just lame. It was a silly technicality and made what she did pointless. I wish more authors committed to these things. If a character dies they stay dead, if they commit a crime they get punished. Maybe that’s just my opinion, but it cheapens when these things happen and there’s no follow through.
So overall it wasn’t the worst book I’ve read, but it wasn’t my favorite either. Much better than Iron Flame (book 2). But like I said earlier, this is made up of some amazing spicy scenes! I know this was a shorter blog, but next on my list to read is Quicksilver, and I’m pretty stoked for that! So get ready to read my thoughts on that!
