Blog #12: Thoughts on New Writings
Hello, long time no blog. My little break did recharge me though, and hopefully I will get back to writing more (blog or stories).
I tried to do NaNoWrimo this November, and let me just say it was a total failure. But it was good it happened! It steered me in a different direction and let me plan a story. Going into NaNo I really had no idea for a story, and I’ve never sat and tried to write something without a foundation for what I was writing. I had planned out the story for Gone Tree for a few years, and just had to put it on paper. I wrote Pill Bottle Romance over a year, with a general story outline and just building on top of that.
So, me being unable to write on the whim wasn’t terribly shocking. So I ended up just stopping writing, because my mind was just so blank with no ideas. I just couldn’t figure out what to do, and I knew I wanted it to fit in the Romance category. But what the Hell did that even mean?
The end of November, about the 29th or so and long after NaNoWrimo was about to end, the idea came to me one night.
I was having one of my usual bouts of insomnia, and I was tossing and turning, thinking over life and projects. Where I wanted my life to go. And that’s when my mind fell on my writing prompt I had started for Nano that had gone nowhere. I’d still keep it a Romance novel, but what if I added fantasy elements? Fantasy in modern times with: Healers, Dark Magic, Tanks (I’m using the WoW term to use for those with strength until I come up with something better), arranged marriages, but in a modern setting with technology and such. I also finally had an idea for the main character, and who the love interest would be and his role as well. I’ve even figured out the “conflict” and such. Now, I still need to piece it all together and do some research but I’m super excited.
Researching specific types of magic, and how it works will be my next step. I’ve never had to do a ton of research for my former works because I was drawing from personal experience. This, I’ll need to read up on magic and how it’s harnessed.
Hopefully I’ll have more updates for you in future blogs, but I’m sure this will take a good amount of time.
