Blog #17: Throne of Glass
It took a bit, but I finally sat down and read the remaining 100 pages I had of Throne of Glass. The book itself was a really good read, I was just busy and put off sitting and reading. The first book in this series by Sarah J Maas was much better than book 1 of her other series, ACOTAR.
I enjoyed Celaena, she was very different from how Feyre was in book 1 of ACOTAR. Celaena was a trained assassin, the best in the area and trained by the best. When the book takes place she is only 18 years old, so she’s accomplished a lot by such a young age of 18, and she is considered so dangerous they send her to a camp where criminals go to die. She’s able to survive, barely, but she does. She knows more than one language, she knows different fighting skills, she’s literate, and knows how to blend in, like a chameleon, so fit in where she needs to. For example, she is told to take on a persona that isn’t the assassin, to spar in the competition. She lowers her abilities to not overwhelm the competition. She also takes on the role of a lady when she walks about the castle, and when she spends time with Lady Nehemia.
I feel like this is why I liked Celaena better in Throne of Glass than Feyre in ACOTAR. In book 1 of ACOTAR, Feyre can hunt to feed her family, but she doesn’t have much character building or depth until the last third of the book. We’ll see that happens in book 2, Crown of Midnight, which I am starting tomorrow.
Alright, no more comparing Celaena and Feyre, moving on.
So I know Dorian is supposed to be the love interest, but I’m 100% team Chaol! He spends the most time with Celaena, and they talk and banter. I really find Dorian boring, and kept wanting to see more of his character, but he was just bland and stagnant. Chaol has his morals and can be stoic, but also goes toe to toe with Celaena, and struggles with many things in the book that just make him interesting. I think he and Celaena would be a good pair.
I won’t give any spoilers, but I will say the ending felt very rushed, and ended the conflict rather quickly. With such a buildup of the problems, and characters, it was aggravating how it just abruptly ended. We see the use and mention of magic that is supposed to be long gone, and then it just smacks you in the face, leaving me as the reader with more questions than answers.
Overall I really enjoyed Throne of Glass and I’m excited to read Crown of Midnight.
